Hotlinking Protection
See the logic powering the hotlink protection - the way it works and when to use it.
Hotlinking, which is oftentimes labeled bandwidth theft as well, describes linking to images that are on another Internet site. In simple terms, if you have a website with some images on it, somebody else may also develop a website and rather than using their own images, they could put links directly to your images. While this might not be such a serious issue if you have one small personal Internet site, it can be something rather serious if the images are copyrighted, as somebody can be attempting to copy your Internet site and cheat people. If your web hosting plan has a restricted monthly bandwidth quota, you might exhaust your resources without getting real website visitors, as the traffic will be consumed by the other website. This is why you should consider preserving your content from being hotlinked - not just images, but also documents, because in rare occasions other types of files are linked too.
Hotlinking Protection in Website Hosting
You can easily protect your content if you generate an .htaccess file in the website’s root folder, but just in case you don't have previous experience, you should use our hotlink protection tool. The latter is provided with all website hosting plans that we offer and can be accessed via the in-house built Hepsia CP. The protection could be activated in 2 basic steps - select the domain or subdomain for the website in question, then pick if our system should set up the .htaccess file inside the main folder or in a subfolder and you'll be ready. You don't require any computer programming capabilities or any experience with this type of matters, as there will be nothing else to do. If you would like to remove the protection at some point, you could see all the sites which are protected in the same section of the CP with a Delete button next to each one of them.
